What they do not realise is, the deeper prayer of Charlie, his wife Erika, people around him (and most Christians), is NOT for safety or success…
Jesus calls people to a selfless life – and He creates in us a desire to what is best for Him and others, not ourselves.
Charlie knew his life was at risk, which is why he was wearing a bullet proof vest. His wife Erika knew the risks – deranged people perverted by evil ideology are not uncommon in his tireless work.
They swear, they shout, they curse, they spit and that day, they shot.
The deeper prayer of Charlie, his wife and others? That God would be glorified – that He would use him / them / us, for His glory and to reach those who need Him.
AND LOOK AROUND!
That prayer is being answered. People all around the world are not just grieving but they are speaking up against evil – they are speaking out about Jesus. They are calling out those who have been indoctrinating our children.
People who would never have heard about Jesus, are from the most unlikely sources. Charlies voice has been magnified ten fold. People have been emboldened. Charlies’ wife has been strengthened and shown incredible courage.
His children? I pray for his children – it will be years before they are able to grapple with the grief and mind warp of what has happened. And really, without God’s intervention they will harbour hatred towards God for what has happened.
Sometimes, especially when painful events happen when we are young, we can not understand how or why God would allow it. A theological answer often means little. Prayers don’t seem to help. But when God reveals who He is & why, we can start to release the pain, the burden, the grief and walk in His plan with peace and comfort.
This life on earth is only a short stint, the life to come will last forever. Forever in God’s presence, where there is no pain or suffering or sadness. Now THAT is something worth living for!
